Norwich’s winning streak continues; UV hops aboard the victory train once again
EDMESTON – Norwich kept their perfect season alive on the road against Edmeston on Tuesday, defeating the home team 8-1 for their sixth win of the season.
Norwich’s offense started when Jordan Jacquette hit a double in the first inning. Standing on second, he watched as his teammate rocked the ball to deep center, sending Jacquette cross home plate for the first Norwich run of the game. Willis ended up at third for a triple.
Angel Alazondo hit a single while Isaac Bennett and Gehrig Sastri walked, loading the bases for Tyler Hagen. Hagen took the first pitch of his at-bat and turned it into a bases clearing double, adding three runs to Norwich’s lead.
Hagen scored on Jacquette’s second double of the game, giving Norwich a 5-0 lead midway through the second inning.
Norwich added three runs in the top of the seventh and the opposition was unable to muster up at type of comeback in their last at-bats.
Edmeston tallied their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth as Greg DeVries walked during his trip to the plate and driven in by Garrett Lum’s triple.
Jacquette started on the hill for Norwich, throwing nine strikeouts in five innings. Willis came on in relief to finish the game. He rung up five Edmeston batters while tossing just 22 pitches.
Lum led Edmeston at the plate, going 2-for-3 with his RBI triple in the loss.
Kaden Collins went a perfect 1-for-1 while Jacquette went 2-for-2 with two walks, a RBI and a stolen base. Willis ended his day offensively going 2-for-3. Hagen led Norwich in the RBI column with his three in the second inning.
“It was the first time this year we didn’t have double digit hits as a team,” said Norwich head coach Greg Bates. “However, it’s always a good day when you don’t play as well as you hope but still get the W.”
Norwich is scheduled to face Greene on Thursday at 6 p.m. Norwich will host as long as the weather holds out. If it doesn’t, a make-up date is to be determined.

Unadilla Valley 9, Sherburne-Earlville 2
SHERBURNE – Unadilla Valley stole the lead from Sherburne-Earlville in the sixth inning when they added two runs to the scoreboard, taking a 3-2 lead. Thanks to six runs in the top half of the seventh, Unadilla Valley secured their fifth victory of the season, defeating the Marauders 9-2 on Tuesday.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the top of the sixth inning, Unadilla Valley was looking to have some offensive production. It happened immediately as Cameron Osborne reached the bases because of an error. Osborne ended up on second base.
His teammate Gavin Bonczkowski needed just two pitches in his at-bat before sending a hard ground ball to left field, scoring Osborne from second to tie the game at 2-2.
The inning rally was continued with a Timmy Postma single, followed by a Colin Grant single. Postma and Grant advanced because of wild pitches. Postma later stole home to give UV a one run lead.
Sherburne-Earlville got on the board in the first inning due to an error by the shortstop. Scoring on the miscue was Ben Menard, who also reached the basepaths because of a UV error.
Tacking on another run in the bottom of the third was the host Marauders. Troy Fleming saw his opportunity for a RBI as he stepped up the plate with the bases loaded. With the count at 2-1, Fleming sent a line drive to center field, scoring Nick McDaniel from third.
Unadilla Valley was able to get out of the bottom half of the frame without any more damage by S-E’s bats being done as they were able to get a fly out and a fielder’s choice to record outs two and three.
Dominick Hartwell was on the mound to start for UV. He pitched for three innings, allowing two runs on one hit while striking out three.
McDaniel was called on to started for Sherburne-Earlville. He went six innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits. He recorded six strikeouts. S-E’s Preston Eaves threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Bonczkowski went 3-for-4 at the plate and picked up two RBIs on the day, leading UV’s offense. Postma and Hartwell both went 2-for-3.
Mason Goedel, Fleming and Eaves had one hit each for Sherburne-Earlville, totaling the Marauders three hits for the game.
Sherburne-Earlville will travel to Mount Markham on Thursday, June 28 while Unadilla Valley is scheduled to host Edmeston. Both games are expected to toss the first pitch at 6 p.m.
